Valleys as far as the eye can see, dotted with aromatic vineyards and ancient villages, offer breathtaking views. Montferrat is an ancient land, home to colourful hills, and a UNESCO heritage site since 2014.
Immerse yourself in breathtaking views and captivating centuries-old traditions.
Come and discover the infernòt, unique artefacts exclusive to Montferrat. The infernòt are cavities manually dug by farmers into the “Pietra da Cantone” (construction stone), typical of the Low Montferrat area. In addition to serving as cellars, farmers also used them for socialising. The historical and cultural significance of these structures has earned our region UNESCO World Heritage status: "Monferrato of the Inferot".
The Sacro Monte di Crea, a suggestive complex of sacred buildings and chapels, is located in the heart of Montferrat, at the top of a hill surrounded by a magnificent wine-growing landscape. In addition to the spiritual component, a visit to the sanctuary allows you to appreciate its architectural distinctiveness and admire the breathtaking panorama that leads up to the Paradise Chapel at the top of the hill.
Casale Monferrato, the capital of the Montferrat region, preserves a historic town steeped in art and ancient treasures. Visit the Museo Civico e Gipsoteca Bistolfi, a former monastery, and the Castello dei Paleologi, a dynasty that ruled over Montferrat for centuries. Don't miss the two key sacred buildings: the Duomo di Casale, with its Giotto-inspired vault, and the Synagogue, one of Europe’s most magnificent.
Terruggia is home to our very own Ariotto Village. The main square, the heart of the town, features a historic swing from 1900 and the Church of San Martino, with its odd pencil-shaped bell tower. The small streets lead to the garden of Palazzo Arborio di Gattinara with its brick walls and Ginkgo Biloba fronds. Terruggia’s iconic landmarks include Villa Poggio Park, the municipal infernòt and the Veglio Tower, perched on a panoramic hill.
The Montferrat hills are dotted with countless small treasures. Cella Monte, one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, enchants visitors with its picturesque tuff and brick alleyways. Colma di Rosignano offers incredible views, which served as inspiration for artist Angelo Morbelli, who lived here. It is a scenic destination for cycling or walking trips, located 5 minutes from Ariotto Village.
Vignale captures the eye from the belvedere of the Church of San Bartolomeo, and Moncalvo, Italy’s smallest village, offers glimpses of unparalleled beauty.
I Montferrat’s castles tell of bygone eras and courtly love, transporting visitors into a fairy-tale dimension. Among the most stunning are Gabiano Castle, with its labyrinth, and Sannazzaro Castle, an architectural masterpiece nestled in the hills. The latter is a privately owned historic residence where guests can enjoy a fairy-tale experience, including a visit to the Church of San Giacomo, decorated with beautiful 16th-century frescoes. Lastly, the Camino Castle, an ancient medieval stronghold, astounds with its grandeur.
